With our society’s growing energy demands comes the need to develop new materials, and at a faster pace than ever before. Semiconducting and conducting nanocrystals are key materials for catalysis and energy, and often their properties can be tuned for various applications. However, understanding how to adjust synthesis conditions to obtain the desired structure and shape remains a challenge, particularly for novel systems.
This seminar is designed to engage a diverse audience, offering accessible insights while incorporating examples from both the literature and my own research. Through case studies, I will highlight how different applications demand unique material properties as well as examples of the iterative cycle of synthesis optimization. While chemical intuition has always played a central role in material synthesis, I will explore how integrating this intuition with machine learning could create more efficient feedback loops for the discovery and optimization of nanocrystal materials.
