Abstract. We will review some of the original concepts and driving forces for nonlinear optics, what has been realized and what is still to be demonstrated in the field of molecular nonlinear optics and photonics. We will start at an introductory level with the constitutive equation at the molecular level, to arrive at the plethora of applications of second and third order nonlinear optical effects in science and engineering.
