Abstract
A simple, reliable, reproducible and efficient method has been achieved to decorate multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with metal or metal oxide/hydroxide nanoparticles (iron, bismuth oxide, barium oxide, maghemite, nickel hydroxide, and lanthanum hydroxide). A novel method involving sodium hydroxide treatment leads to the purification of MWCNTs. The chemical functionalization of MWCNTs via diazonium salts generated in-situ followed by impregnation in the presence of IR radiation is the innovative part allowing homogeneous impregnation. Calcining impregnated samples at an optimum temperature results in a controlled decoration process of MWCNTs surface with nanoscale dimension particles (<10 nm mostly). The present methodology is proved to be used for large scale preparation. Integration of the properties of MWCNTs and nanoparticles in the nanocomposite with superior characteristics are observed for different applications such as dye removal and electrochemical sensor for organic molecules. Materials have also been successfully applied for defense applications (energetic materials and kevlar reinforcement).
The session is open to the public.
