Prof. Bert U.W. Maes - University of Antwerp - will present "Transition metal-catalyzed synthesis of nitrogen containing compounds"

Although Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have historically been developed for haloarene substrates, they are now widely applied to haloheteroarenes as well (given the importance of the heterocyclic motifs in commercial fine chemicals). In sharp contrast to the widespread application of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions on haloheteroarenes, experimental data regarding the effect of the heteroatoms on the fundamental steps of the catalytic cycle are scarce. Study of the oxidative addition of haloheteroarenes to Pd(0) complexes surprisingly revealed an unprecedented reaction mechanism dependent on the halogen.
The second part of the lecture will deal with cyclic (including heteroaromatic) and acyclic guanidine synthesis.
These have important applications in many fields and therefore several synthetic approaches are available for their preparation. The health risk, flammability, and reactivity of the reagents required for these classical methods makes them less interesting. During the lecture new sustainable methods based on transition metal catalysis with isocyanides will be presented.
